The two of them had immense on-page chemistry, and their relationship always moved the plot forward, serving as mutual character development. Some positives: Usually, I roll my eyes at the stereotypical romance trend found in Young Adult novels–this is not the case with Valek and Yelena’s budding relationship, it was actually one of my favorite parts of the story. With sinister plots, a strong-willed heroine, and a surprising romance, the Poison Study series leads readers through a fantastical world of adventure. As Yelena searches for a way to escape her fate, she soon realizes she’s in the middle of an immense political battle, where loyalties must be drawn, magic must be relied upon, and nothing is what it seems. After choosing the latter, Yelena is thrown into poison lessons with the very frustrating–yet stubbornly handsome–Valek, the Commander’s right-hand man and Ixia’s most deadly assassin. She can either face certain execution, or become the new poison taster for the Commander. Plot Summary: After being thrown into the Commander’s dungeons for committing murder, Yelena is given a choice. My overall series rating: B (individual books: Poison Study=A++, Magic Study=B-, Fire Study=C)
